I tried a variety of different objective functions, which included sum-of-squared differences, absolute differences, weighted absolute differences, mutual information, and normalised mutual information. The results reached using these objective functions gave unique yet similar answers in terms of quality. It was not obvious to one's eye which objective function worked best.
