Interface Language

On an issue that does involve plug-ins, will WordPress allow change of interface
language in the future? As far as I know, language is currently hard-coded. It
would be a huge pro if phrases were defined outside the functions. The diverse
WordPress community would quickly provide a huge selection of translations,
which only weigh at a few kilobytes.

As Gallery version 2 (beta 4) was released yesterday (

), you can see that they took similar steps, e.g.

This seems to be a trend, which is perhaps worth following. I don't think it can
be turned into a plug-in. It has a global effect and requires support from the
core. In terms of performance, you only need to access a single peripheral
file.
