I have a couple of questions about customizing the toolbar:
1) Is there a lyx function that applies layouts (environments) to a
selection or to the current paragraph, which can be used by a (custom)
toolbar button? (I didn't find any)
It appears not to be the case.
2) Are there keyboard shortcuts for layouts (environments)? Where
would I find those?
Ditto, but see comments below.
3) Is there a way to add a second toolbar? The website mentions that
the Qt front-end can handle multiple toolbars, but I find no
documentation on how to do so. Adding another "Toolbar" section in
default.ui just makes lyx crash.
I hope these things are possible; having to open the layout combobox
and scroll down until you find the environment you are looking for is
a serious disadvantage of the LyX user interface, since choosing an
environment is one of the most common editing activities. I wish the
upcomming 1.4 release would provide a more user-friendly approach to
selecting environments (hint: context-sensitive, right-click menus,)
or at least, a way to customize the toolbars to do so.
Thanks.
I agree. A temporary workaround, which I have slowly become accustomed to,
is clicking the environments box, then inputting the first letter and
pressing ENTER. This suffers from the need for mouse movement and, if
there are several environment identifiers beginning with the same letter
(e.g. "(S)tandard" and "(S)ection), there need be multiple clicks accompa-
nied by careful user attention.
As for a separate yet similar usability matter, yesterday I was reminded
that being able to embed Paragraph and Character options in the toolbar
(or anywhere in the main window) would be highly valuable too. When frag-
mented into 3 separate windows, for instance, LyX becomes less manageable.
It consumes more screen space than necessary and requires movement win-
dow-by-window.
I guess this is nothing but a wishlist feature. I always feel shy to ask
for anything from Open Source projects. I don't know if there is a more
appropriate place for suggestions to be made. I suspect there is no
Sourceforge page...?
Cheers,
Roy
