In my personal opinion, it is unusual and extreme. You don't have a reason
to worry though. Are you using DataViz Docs2Go? When synchronising you need
to close the document on both sides. If it is open on the Palm, then
HotSync will generate a warning message.

I think you should be thankful that the Palm 'treated' you to a back-up
copy. I imagine that HotSync requested Window$ to assign a lock to a file
which was already locked by Word (and therefore inaccessible). Decide for
yourself if Window$ is to be blamed or maybe Palm. As usual, I will blame
Window$. It should handle locking exceptions. As for the handheld, it
ceased to receive a flow of data from a PC that went 'out of control'. Did
you try pressing <cancel>? Did you try to wait for a timeout?
