URL Hacking?

I have become aware of a strange pattern in my log files and I need some
advice.

Once in a while, my error log comes up with some really strange URL's that
do not exist on my site. I don't know if it's an oddity relating to the
browsers or simply the visitors messing about. In any case, I spend time
investigating broken URL's in vain. Here is one of three entries that came
up this afternoon:

161.73.144.221 - - [04/Oct/2004:12:50:27 +0100] "GET
/Projects/MATLAB/MATLAB_files/top.htm HTTP/1.1" 404 2155
"http://www.schestowitz.com/Projects/MATLAB/"; "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible;
MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1)"

I have no directory called MATLAB_files and my server and code is pure
Linux.

What is happening?

TIA,

Roy
