A link is a link. If you have a banner ad without alt text then it will be
just the URL link. Backlinks shown from the Google toolbar is a random
chosen few. They do not show all the backlinks, but that doesn't mean those
links are not counted. If you choose to use an image or banner be sure to
have at least some alt text to help for indexing.
