Something like that happened to me when I installed some digital camera
software. It was only a couple of weeks ago. I could not sleep properly and
once the software was removed, the problem disappeared.

What you describe must be the result of a rogue process. You need to try to
identify it. it is easy with the KDE System Guard, yet also under Window$
you should be able to monitor the activities in detail. Press
CTRL+ALT+Delete and then <task manager> (I think it is still called
that...).
