Hi Bill,
First of all, have a look at Mozilla Thunderbird which is a much more
powerful E-mail client (see my review at
http://schestowitz.com/Weblog/index.php?p=23). It is also cross-platform
and will store your messages in an open format.

To transfer contacts, use the format CSV (Comma-Separated Values). Export as
CSV from one application and then import as CSV in the other.
Thunderbird has an extension that allows synchronisation of addresses
(Thunderbird<->Palm). Let me know if you want more details on this.
