I am afraid that the simple answer is also rather short: Choose only the
background and then _invert_ selection. How to choose only the (uniform
colour) background? By using that 'magic wand' tool that makes a selection
while using some threshold for boundaries. I use this 'trick' when creating
shadows (using Script Fu) around one particular object.
