If you have a remote Linux machine which you can access, then also consider
PuTTY <http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/> with X-Server
such as the ones from Labtam <http://www.labtam-inc.com>. I installed
Cygwin when I was younger, but it's only essential if you must work on the
native O/S.
