Another thing to watch is end-of-line. From memory, Linux uses LF, Mac uses
CR and Windows uses CR/LF.  I exported my mbox directly to Windows, but got
nowhere until I had changed the end-of-line to Windows standard.  Kate will
do that.  In Windows, Wordpad seems to be able to format the text
correctly, then I just save it again.  As I haven't used a Mac, I can't
comment on how your user could do it.
