Sorry to be so slow getting back to everyone on this. I've has a truly
horrendous weekend with the machine :( HD fault, CDROM fault and suspect CDs as
well :(

I really, really, REALLY must stop using second-hand bits and build a 'proper'
computer!

I don't think Ext3 can be the issue as it also is exactly the same with RaiserFS
partitions - You'd be amazed at how many times i reformatted various hard drives

This is slightly puzzling. The top processes keep swapping around, which I
suppose is to be expected. Most I can understand, but I have no idea what
net_applet and mdkapplet are supposed to do. I don't have any network stuff
running, and the internet connection is on ordinary dialup. I've listed one
'freeze' below.
