I personally find Konsole far beyond satisfactory, albeit slow (especially if
you enable snazzy stuff like translucency). The tab support in Konsole is
fairly good, which much like Konqueror as a file manager, allows you to
'reside' is sparate locations/directories at the same time, without window
clutter.
What I personally find useful, as an alternative to tabbed c/konsole'ing is a
virtual desktop which is fully dedicated to shells. If you have RAM to
spare, have your 'favourite' locations open in separate shells or file
managers (as windows or tabs). Then, you can use the keyboard to jump back
and fourth, doing your stuff in the terminals without navigating much (file
manager) or using the "cd" command.
