[News] Facebook Thanks Open Source and Linux, Gives Back

The Spirit of Openness

,----[ Quote ]
| Almost all our servers are running open-source software. Our Web
| servers use Linux and Apache and PHP. Our database servers run MySQL.
| We use memcached to help keep the site snappy. Some of our
| behind-the-scenes software is written in Python and Perl and Java,
| and we use gcc and Boost for the parts that aren't. Our developers
| use Subversion and git to keep track of their work. The list goes
| on--like many Web sites, we use it from top to bottom.

The same goes for YouTube, which relies on a lot of Python code. It's just
one among almost every successful startup. Digg and Netscape use MySQL and
PHP. Google uses GNU tools endlessly...

| When I started computing more than a decade ago I remember it took me weeks
| to learn a new program for self-expression, calculation or collaboration.
| Today it's fun, it takes me about five minutes total, it doesn't require
| any skills and within seconds I can take part in a worldwide distributed
| live-communication.

SOA + RIA + OSS = Web 2.0

,----[ Quote ]
| Open source software is the underpinning of many SOA and RIA solutions.
| Open source software is the dominant solution for Ajax RIA interfaces...
| Web 2.0 is also about collaboration and using the Internet as a social
| network. It is hard to find a better example of this spirit than within
| the open source communities. Open source software is built socially.
| Communication and transparency are core values of an open source
| project.

A look inside Google's open-source kitchen

,----[ Quote ]
| DiBona: We use the Linux kernel. We've got the GNU tools, we use a lot of
| the compiler collection from the Free Software Foundation. We use some
| Apache libraries--we don't use the Apache Web servers so often, but we do
| use a lot of their libraries. We use a lot of OpenSSL and OpenSSH. We use
| languages like Python and C. We use a fair amount of MySQL, all kinds of
| things.
