The current compatibility list, I like this one because it is real users who
have tried software so you get a real answer,

http://www.iexbeta.com/wiki/index.php/Windows_Vista_RC_1_Software_Compatibility_List

it seems quite reasonable.

There are some that are blocked because they are designed to work at system
or filesystem level, so the different file system would require a change in
that software. That includes anti-virus, because as I understand it MS have
changed the MBR system and also moved the starting point of the drive, so
anti-virus vendors would have expected to have to release an update for
vista.

There are some others that wouldn't be affected by that and it is hard to
guess why they might not work.

Then they are some problems which are very likely to be minor problems or
simply need to be installed in XP compatibility mode.

There seems to be some comms change that is affecting VPNs, some repairable
including openVPN which just requires an updated TAP file from sourceforge.

The only contradictory part in that list puts all of the MS Office in as
compatible, while much of the web-press is crying 'incompatible'. I also
know of one personally who couldn't get Office XP to load properly, but did
manage Office 2000 without a problem. We know that the press often get
their information from each other, because it is already in jerno speak so
a simple copy-paste means a longer lunch time, so there is likely a lot of
unnecessary cries going out.

I personally don't care about what works and what doesn't, except where my
users at work at concerned, i.e. basic office. All I want is for MS to have
properly made large steps towards a secure system. I still wont get it for
myself, I want this because it is an important step for web apps, so in the
end affects us all.
