Most of the schematic capture and pcb auto-routers were on UNIX first and
therefore could be compiled for your Linux. Really though the high graphics
of the workstations were needed for detailed work. That shouldn't be a
problem these days because our clients have good graphics.
For the pcb auto-routing, I used to use one that took 3-4 hours on a cray II
for a typical single board 68xxx. Then in a commercial company I was put on
a DOS pc and a simmilar design took about 24 hours and it wasn't able to
finish the job, I had a handfull of connections to do manually.
You still need power for this sort of work and Linux is the most likely
system to give you that power.
