That was a good idea but no luck.  The box was and is checked.

I ran '/usr/X11R6/bin/xset dpsm force off' and the monitor goes black for
1 or 2 seconds before turning the dark grey color again.  My understanding
is that that should do it.

It works on a Suse 9.3 laptop and I checked xorg.conf and they look pretty
similar to me.

Anybody know where else to look?
