First, I've seen no-one here claim that Linux runs on a 286, I assume
that was simple hyperbole from you.
Second, we aren't talking about even 386 machines (which linux does run
on, tyvm) but PII-PIII and the like, and yes, modern distros run just
fine on such light hardware. Where have you been hiding? Do they run
faster on newer machines? of course. Is it a good idea to reduce the eye
candy level? probably, but the distro works just fine.
MS is king of bloat, there's little comparison in *that* field.
