I think it's good to speak about different sets of users.

Corporations can take care of themselves, there's no need to worry
about them. They have technical deparments and they can better judge
for themselves. Individuals, on the other, are more amenable to good
advice.

I think with regard to the average individual, linux would make a great
choice.
1- It has great hardware support if your hardware is generic enough.
2- It has tons and tons of quite useful software.

What does the average user want?

Browse the net? Firefox is oustanding.
Instant message? Gaim is great.
Watch media? VLC and Mplayer open up just about anything.
Listen to music? Amarok is excellent.
Organise personal information? Evolution, Imendio Planner.
Write? Gedit, Abiword, OOo, Lyx.
Spreadsheet? OOo, gnumeric.
Program? Well, *nix is it.

My Windows falls apart once I'd installed a few programs. Linux feels
solid as a rock.

Here's what I personally find a problem; stupid NTFS. I had 300Gbs in
NTFS and that delayed my migration to Linux because dealing with those
was too much of a hassle. I finally migrated to Ubuntu and I don't
think I'm going back to windows. I'll have to find the time to burn
those partitions onto DVDs and reclaim the drives.
