I hear what you say ("wrote" rather) and it makes perfect
sense. In general, there will always remain this tradeoff
between consumption of resources (or lack of) versus
functionality. There are particular features/tasks that
drain available resources for little or no apparent gain
(primarily eye candy like XGL, but also widgets that are
XPM's). As long as the user reaction is slower than the
processing time, this should be fine. When the user waits,
then it's time to strip down the DE and re-think the whole
thing. Look at the high entry barrier that Windows Vista,
for example, has posed.
