Encryption is optional, but the idea has already crossed my mind. Users can
in due time be 'encouraged' to change their file storing habits (e.g.
metadata, encryption, and the WinFS vaporware, acting as an abstraction
layer to NTFS, but nonetheless makes the migration a lossy one). Remember:
the stronger the 'pinch', the more unethical Microsoft will become. Given
the filthy bahaviour that you see in Get the Facts (Microsoft started with
patch-counting FUD involving Red Hat yesterday), expect nothing but
unethical moves that primarily feed on Joe Average's apathy or ignorance.
Vis-a-vis FS's, Windows filesystems are yet to catch up with the latest of
Reiser, as well as the recent semantic storage system for GNU/Linux (and
other POSIX-compliant platforms, IIRC).
