By the time Microsoft, with all their cash, could come close to Apple's
lead, this technology will be dead and buried.
It's just dawned on me why MS are having such problems now; up until
recently, most technical progress was being made on the PC, so that MS
were able to clone/copy/steal other people's work, and include it into
their Windows or Office or whatever packages.
Unfortunately for Microsoft, most technical progress, for the last 6-7
years plus, has been made in quite different areas. These areas include
supercomputing clusters, phones, handheld devices, music/video players,
gaming consoles, servers various, net services, and so on.
Worse than that for MS, the developments which /have/ been made on the PC
have been using the GPL, so Microsoft have been unable to clone/copy/steal
the works (hence why the GPL is a cancer - you can't steel the work,
or why BSD licence is good - you /can/ take the work).
I wonder how long before Mr Ballmer is chasing after google executives
brandishing a sawn-off chair.
