KDE (largely Qt-based applications) and GNOME (GTK+GDK applications) work
interchangeably. Those applications thatjust using X with other
development/UI toolkit -- likewise.
In practice, this means that you can use any application you like under
all desktop environments (and window managers). SuSE indeed comes with a
large variety of those and you can choose which one is initiated by
default. At login time, you have a drop-down box, in case you wish to
change.
Many KDE-related desktop and applications settings will be stored under
~/.kde in your home directory, whereas GNOME will go under ~/.gnome or
~/.gnome2, as well as other ~/g*. This means that your home directory
facilitates a diversity without any collisions and with full
interoperability. In that respect, SuSE makes it all painless as it comes
in this form 'out of the box'. In the case of Ubuntu, you will need to
tick boxes in Synaptic (e.g. to install KDE in Ubuntu). No big deal
either...
