[News] Open Source Films Explained in Wall Street Journal

,----[ Quote ]
| Viewers of a new, animated short film online have an option not usually
| available to moviegoers: If they don't like the film, they're welcome to
| change it. The film, called "Elephants Dream," is available as a free
| download. Its component production files and all of the animation software
| used to make it can be downloaded free, too. Anyone, the filmmakers say,
| can hold a public screening or television broadcast of the film, redub it
| with new dialogue or even change the look of the characters (the latter
| option requires some knowledge of graphics and digital film).
|
| The project is in part a publicity initiative by the Blender Foundation, a
| nonprofit Dutch group, to promote Blender, its free graphics and animation
| software. It's also part of a larger online movement to advance a different
| copyright model. Unlike major record labels and movie studios, which
| typically work to curb free sharing of music and movies on the Web, some
| groups advocate an approach that lets creators keep some rights to their
| work while allowing the public to freely view, copy and distribute it.
