Prof Levitt at HBS would be quick to disagree, roy! He had a tale he
told about things that were supposed to sell themselves. It went along
the lines of "What product could possibly sell itself? Pick something
that is desired by everyone and thus should be the most likely to be
able to sell itself.". The answer he would pose would be "Sex! Surely
that can sell itself!" But then he would enumerate the sales pitches
for men's and women's products that were 100% aimed at making the
owner/user more attractive to the opposite sex. The inescapable
conclusion is that, if sex has to be so pampered in order to sell to a
consumer who is so likely to want it, what chance do a bunch of snotty
techno-dweebs like yourselves, standing in front of yesterday's computer
honking about grep and awk and emacs and vi being better than anything,
have to sell linux? LOL!!!

MS at least recognizes the reality of the situation.
