Kate puts KWrite in a pane, so it's no surprise.

Also, if you haven't got many personalised settings, consider emptying
(deleting) your KWrite directory under ~/.kde/share/apps/kwrite (or a
variant thereof, e.g. .kde3). Try the above fist and remember to make
backups.
