WordPress uses some Ajax in the administration panel, but on the
visitor-facing side, there is little Ajax to be seen, unless you install
some plug-ins such as Live Archives (which is probably just plain
JavaScript, no XML).

Bear in mind that Google and Oracle both released Ajax toolkits in the past
week, e.g.:

The one you want is the Google Web Toolkit (GWT).
