without reading the article that would just take a huge metric ass load
of work to do. vista is opengl over directx, although the lower level
graphics api is the guts of the interface, it would still have to be
re-written.

ms took bsd sockets into winsock, they could put xgl into vista if they
wanted, but they dont have to as they have gl routines that aero makes
use of already, compiz would be just a few window manager tweaks so it's
nothing special for them.

i was thinking today that it would be a few months before someone makes
some kind of port, maybe cygwin changes or whatever for it... but
generally i doubt more than a few (2-6) months before someone has had
chance to add all the ui features to some vista add on.

still doesnt change things though, it wont be as good or work as
productively as the command line does ootb on bsd/linux/gnu systems.
