[News] Microsoft Seeks to Kill the GPL

The GPL, Stage Front and Center - IBM Answers SCO's Attack

,----[ Quote ]
| No doubt that Microsoft hates the GPL. And it fears what the GPL can
| mean over the long run. So in their effort to prevent others from
| participating in the industry and in the interest of restricting
| competing products, Microsoft feels it must bad mouth and discredit
| the GPL. It certainly has done this directly. And it has done so by
| financing SCO. And now it has done so by entering agreements with GPL
| distributors hoping to get them to violate that agreement (i.e. the
| GPL). And perhaps not a literal violation. Just the spirit. It is the
| GPL spirit that Microsoft wants to destroy. It is that spirit that
| delivers the competing products. The superior lower cost products. So
| while you see comments coming from Microsoft that they will have to
| just accept competing with open source, the truth is that Microsoft
| will go to all ends to invalidate open source. Especially those open
| source licenses that it can not take advantage of.

| Efforts to hurt us from inside are the most dangerous. I think we'll
| also see more attempts to dilute the definition of Open Source to
| include partially-free products... However, the strong
| reaction against the KDE project before the Qt library went fully
| Open Source bodes poorly for similar efforts by MS and its ilk.
