I know...but how do you get one for less than $700? Sony made 80000
available in Japan, and they sold out very quickly. In North America,
they announced 400000 would be available, but a report just before
launch said this was cut roughly in half. Those also went very quickly.
I've not heard of anyplace yet receiving a second shipment.
So, to grab one, eBay is the only reasonably feasible method at the
moment. Good luck getting one for under $700 there. There are some
going for just under $900 now (a considerably improvement from two days
ago, when I saw several auctions that had passed $6000).
Supply is going to stay tight for a while, and resale prices high for a
couple of reasons. First, Blu-Ray drives are in short supply, so Sony
isn't going to be able to come anywhere near meeting the holiday demand
from the people who are looking for a game system.
Second, reports are that considered just as a Blu-Ray player, ignoring
the gaming side of it completely, it has a *better* picture (and perhaps
better interface performance) than the stand-alone players. Considering
that the stand-alone players cost $1000, the PS3 is very attractive to
people whose primary interest is Blu-Ray movies. Basically, from their
point of view it is a better, less expensive Blu-Ray player that throws
in a *free* next generation gaming system. So, a lot of the people that
would be spending $1000 for a Blu-Ray player will consider a PS3 for,
say, $900, to be a bargain. That's going to keep it a hot eBay item for
quite a while.
Putting it all together, grabbing a PS3 now is hard, and almost
impossible if you want to do it for $700.
