This particular application does not need any more space than most others
do. Except that it is buggy and does not maximize properly leaving critical
controls located at the bottom inaccessible unless I switch to fvwm for
instance.

Panning solved the problem in a way. I can now access the bottom parts of
this buggy program window but not go back up. No matter.
