[News] Why Open Source and Security are Synonymous

'Wide open' means extra security

,----[ Quote ]
| There's a reason nearly every security appliance vendor uses open
| source tools, and it has little to do with licensing. The vast majority
| of these devices -- ranging from spam and spyware filters to network
| scanners to intrusion detection and prevention systems -- are not only
| built on an open source platform such as Linux or FreeBSD, but they also
| actively use other open source products to accomplish their given tasks.

There is mental barrier. People naturally think that closed=secure and
open=exposed. In reality, it's the very opposite.

Embedded Linux and GPLv3

,----[ Snippet ]
| Embedded Linux like the kind found in the WRT54GL is popping up
| everywhere. It's in mobile phones, MP3 players, PDAs, set top boxes,
| networking equipment--almost every NAS box we've tested ships with some
| form of the Linux kernel. If what I saw at Linux World Expo last week was
| any indication, its popularity in CE devices will only continue to grow.
| Motorola, the world's second largest handset maker, indicated that 50%
| to 60% of its phones will be running Linux in the next few years.
|
| Corporations like embedded Linux for a number of reasons. For one, it
| usually costs far less to develop and license. Development efforts are
| bolstered by the support of the open source community, an abundant source
| of code and innovation. Need a driver for a specific piece of hardware?
| Chances are someone out there has already written one. The open platform
| also provides a standardized environment for developers so they don't have
| to keep "reinventing the wheel". All of these benefits are passed on to
| consumers in the form of lower prices, shared technology with the
| development community, and positive network effects from products built
| on open, interoperable platforms.
