It's a few days to earn the money for a Photoshop license, not several 
weeks.  For people using it heavily for professional work, the increase 
in productivity with Photoshop compared to GIMP will save them more than 
the cost of the license.

Professionals use the best tool for the job at hand.  If that tool won't 
be around in 10 years, then for the jobs they are doing 10 years from 
now, they'll use another tool (whichever is best 10 years from now).
