I think that's a little different.
AMD bought ATi because it saw that the margins for the video and the
importance of the video processor was exceeding that of the CPU.
In the case of Pepsico, they were attempting to "control the market" for
their own product. I did some more research and I guess that strategy
must have failed, because they sold off all their food franchises in
1997 (they are now part of the Yum! food group).
I think that Microsoft will find a similar problem in trying to manage
and own its own marketplace, rather than delivering a quality product
that people would want to own.
