[News] Oracle Revs Up Berkeley

Open Source Database Gets An Oracle Upgrade

,----[ Quote ]
| Berkeley DB, the open source database system frequently used in
| Linux applications, can now be patched while it's still running. It's
| the type of "nonstop" feature that's been sought by Berkeley DB users
| for years and placed at the front of the development roadmap by
| Sleepycat, former owner of the embedded database system.

MySQL AB recently dumped Berkeley DB. It was released by Oracle under an Open
Source license, having been acquired amidst Ellion's hostile takeover bids
(the infamous shopping spree for Open Source companies that continued
history of rivalry elimination, e.g. PeopleSoft).

Noteworthy:

| Oracle's Linux commitment began in 1998 with the first commercial database
| on Linux. Today, only Oracle provides support for the complete software
| stack on Linux with applications, middleware, database and the operating
| system, including Red Hat, Novell/SUSE and Asianux. All Oracle products
| run on Linux, and Oracle Database on Linux meets the EAL4 Common
| Criteria Standard, the highest security level for commercial software.
| With Oracle's performance and reliability on Linux, you can standardizey
| our IT infrastructure on low-cost commodity servers, and with Oracle
| Real Application Clusters on Linux, you can scale out to meet demands on
| the fly.
