Do what we have just done at the University? We have got a deal with Micro
Direct.

Student gets virus, sobs, then referred to MD. They'll sort 'em out.
Meanwhile, network staff handle /real/ problems. Very few of them, which
translates into idle time for a fixed-rate salary. Honest! You can define
your boundaries in terms of what you are willing to deal with and what is
utter garbage that a mininformed user should figure out for self. If Windows
require what we call the '5 steps to security', then it's a recipe for
trouble. It says it on the tin, so to speak.

Many seek assistance from the next-door neighbour, which reminds me of a
point that I often stress. While /some/ Linux users /sometimes/ hang out in
forums burning time, Windows folks do 'maintenance' not only for themselves,
but also for others. Think, for instance, about Steve Ballmer who struggled
for _2 days_ as he attempted to remove malware (in vain, BTW). Even his
engineers truly struggled in their latest attempts and I am not sure how it
ended up leaking to the press/blogsphere.

Best wishes,

Roy
