I note that my shiny new Vista install is languishing in obscurity. I
run it now and then, just to play the "hunt the display properties
applet" game.

It's definitely a step backwards ... several steps actually. Steps that
could be accomplished in virtually a single click, now require
navigating through hoards of meaningless windows and dialogues.
