For you Britishers, perhaps. :-)

I suppose in a pinch I could go through Outpost.com (a
variant of Fry's Electronics online) and buy components.
I've also mentioned system76.com, which is based in
Boulder; that's not that close to me (SF Bay Area) but
not that far, either.

Regrettably,
http://www.linux.org/vendor/hardware/index.html has all
of 3 vendors on it, but this appears to be a stale Google
link (thank you, Google *grumble grumble mumble spit*);
if one instead tries http://www.linux.org/vendor/ leads
to http://www.linux.org/vendor/system/desktop.html which
suggests 50 vendors.

Debian has its own list:
http://www.debian.org/distrib/pre-installed

Neither includes system76.com, strangely enough.

http://news.zdnet.co.uk/hardware/0,1000000091,39286228,00.htm
is titled

"Top 5 PC manufacturers fail naked PC test"

ZDNet's reporters posed as undercover buyers to
identify the policy of the top-five PC vendors in terms
of supplying systems without an operating system, known
as naked PCs. A naked PC gives IT professionals freedom
to install the operating system of their choice.

But the ZDNet investigation showed that none of the
five manufacturers would sell any PCs without Windows,
    our reporters found.

The reasons â?? or excuses â?? were varied.

Gaah.

Murphy was an optimist.
