Microsoft no longer have the automatic kudos they used to; it wasn't so
long ago that a vapourware announcement from Microsoft was enough to halt
whole development projects in other companies.  Now it's very much the
other way around, as by the time Microsoft actually release something,
the alternatives are so much more capable, effective, functional,
reliable and less expensive than the Microsoft version that the team
leader ends up leaving the company in order to find a proper job.

iPhone is a different issue, though - there, Apple are not taking on
Microsoft, rather, they're taking on companies with years of successful
product design and marketing such as Nokia, Sony/Ericsson and so on.  I
think Apple might get a run for their money there.
