That was well done, unlike some of these bloggs you felt like this was a
genuine attempt to find the right distro and genuinely pleased at his final
result.
I still say that openSuse in my mind is the best all round server/desktop
for home and small office.
The only real grumble I would have with openSuse is it's use of the 'users'
group account as default for all users /home's. I think that is just plain
wrong for any Linux server or client. Much better for each user to have a
private group, then if there is going to be any sharing it ought to be done
outside of the user's own space.
But that is an easy one to solve.
In all other respects openSuse makes life very easy for the user and the
admin.
SLES in my view knocks spots off all of the other server distros. But I do
have a grumble about that.
My SLES servers are all registered on the Novell site, but one of the
machines lost touch and wouldn't update, the details of it on the Novell
site were wrong it had changed to a none active status. But it did ask me
to re-register it, so I did using it's registration number. That made it
worse now none of my machines would update.
I wrote to support telling them exactly what was wrong. They wrote back
saying 'We do not deal with this kind of problem', that is absolutely true,
that is the message I got back. I have tried writing to Novell a few times
since, as you do, but nothing has changed, the only responses I actually
got were the automatic ones. So I just started updateing them myself.
Since then I though, sod em, I'll carry on updating them myself. So when the
current support contract runs out I wont be paying anymore, Novell hasn't
really lost a customer because I still like SLES, but I'm not paying for a
support that doesn't exist.
So if you need a good server distro I reccommend SLES, but if you might need
a good support system, don't touch it with a barge pole.
Actually, since Oracle kicked Redhat up the bum, Redhat seems to have got
the teams working on Redhat server again, so that may be worth looking at
next time I need one.
