Nothing other than a total rewrite / redesign will fix Windows'
problems IMHO. If Microsoft were to open-source it the only benefit to
SW developers would be to see how not to write an OS.

There is no doubt about that regardless of what the likes of OK say.

The question is, can Microsoft's illegally maintained monopoly, ie
force OEM's to drop XP (which most users appear to want), force Vista
onto peoples desktop?

There is a huge opportunity for Linux and OSS here but only if the
OEM's have the guts to give Microsoft the finger and offer a Linux
distro as an alternative. Corporate / government CTO's aren't going
to touch Vista for the foreseeable future, certainly not before SP1,
