It never existed until the likes of Bill Gates came along and robbed Stallman
/et al/ of what used to be the norm, and what actually made a lot of sense.
What was it all for? Security through obscurity? Hell no! As Gates said, it
was about people getting rewarded for writing of good code, essentially by
restricting access to it. It was all about _MONEY_. And no they'll spend
whatever it takes on FUD (percepttion change) to keep the $tatu$ quo.
