| adds Vista detection, newer alsa sound utilities, better handling
| of CDROM devices, etc.

Vista scoots to new boot, but it's still kinda rooted

,----[ Quote ]
| While Microsoft would like the world to believe that anyone running Windows
| has no need of any other operating system, that attitude doesn?t cut much
| mustard with many of its users.
|
| Why settle for one OS when your PC is easily capable of running two or
| more?
|
| [...]
|
| One of the more questionable tactics that Microsoft has implemented in
| Vista is to automatically overwrite any existing MBR during the
| installation process without asking if you mind or giving you an option
| to back up.
|
| Microsoft says that the Windows installation system can't intelligently
| interrogate an existing non-MS MBR, although such features are quite
| common in the install routine for other OSes.
|
| It also argues that an "official" Vista MBR is required for security
| features -- such as measured boot, which works with Trusted Platform
| Module (TPM)-enabled chips to check that the OS hasn't been hacked or
| altered each time it boots -- to work correctly.

Geek in Paradise - Vista Upgrade

,----[ Quote ]
| As the HP Advisor disc was in the process of finishing, the machine
| froze solid. After giving it 5 minutes of no disk activity, I reset
| the machine to be greeted by a lovely blinking cursor. I put the
| Vista disc in and booted into a repair installation, where I ran the
| Repair tool. My hunch was proved correct when it returned a corrupted
| MBR, which it had fixed. Thinking all was well, I rebooted to be
| greeted with a black screen (no blinking cursor). Well, there's
| something more going on so I rebooted into the repair tool and let
| it do it's thing. This time, it found a Corrupted Partition table
| which it then said it repaired. Awesome! Next reboot was greeted by
| the same black screen, so I figured the other partition was corrupt
| as well and let the repair tool run again and fix the partition
| table again. Reboot, same thing...

Review: SimplyMEPIS Linux 6.5

,----[ Quote ]
| If you're desktop distro shopping, I'd put SimplyMEPIS 6.5 in the
| list of distros to try. It's a nice desktop and worth evaluating.

| All in all, MEPIS will get you going in no time, regardless what
| desktop-oriented task you want to do. The Ubuntu-base gives you access
| to a huge array of well-working applications.

| Everything seems to be catered for once again. Out of the box
| functionality is equivalent to a few hours of tiresome installing in XP

SimplyMepis 6.5 - Simply Wonderful

,----[ Quote ]
| Some folks say SimplyMepis is just a remaster, a psuedo-distro not
| worthy of being included in DistroWatch's Top 10 distro list. This
| is a fairly uninformed opinion I think. Surely they've never tested
| SimplyMepis. This is like saying Mandriva is simply a remastered
| Red Hat or openSUSE is a remastered Slackware. SimplyMepis has
| always been an original system design to which few could even
| come close. When it arrived on the scene, it was the newcomer's
| answer to "can I run Debian?" It was a pioneer in the area of
| user-friendly and it continues to improve and offer one of the
| best systems available today.

Review: SimplyMEPIS 6.5 64

,----[ Quote ]
| Unlike my last venture with SimplyMEPIS 6.5 RC 1, this final release
| gets the treatment of a full install to my desktop system. It will take
| the place of Sabayon Linux 3.3 which I have found to be a great
| distribution on my system. I have used Sabayon as the exclusive
| Linux OS on my desktop since I reviewed it, and with the exception
| of a few minor faults, I have enjoyed it greatly.
|
| [...]
|
| All we need now are the more prominent PC vendors to allow users to
| buy their systems with Linux pre-installed. Thankfully it looks like
| Dell is finally coming around.

SimplyMEPIS 6.5 Release Candidate 2 [screenshots]

,----[ Quote ]
| The second release candidate for SimplyMEPIS 6.5 is now
| available. SimplyMEPIS 6.5 RC2 replaces QtParted with
| GParted, improvements to the MEPIS Xconfig assistant,
| and a fair amount of other changes beyond the original
| release candidate. SimplyMEPIS is another Ubuntu-based
| distribution.

SimplyMEPIS 6.5 RC3 adds Beryl 0.2.0 Final and Installer Translations

,----[ Quote ]
| SimplyMEPIS 6.5 RC3 has been uploaded to the MEPIS subscribers
| pool and propagated to the public mirrors.

Review: SimplyMEPIS 6.5 RC1

,----[ Quote ]
| SimplyMEPIS 6.5 is definitely the coolest distribution I have
| reviewed so far. The eye candy is very sweet indeed, but more over
| it is put together well and simply works. I also like the fact
| it uses KDE instead of GNOME, but mainly for personal preference.

MEPIS founder clarifies MEPIS/Ubuntu relationship

,----[ Quote ]
| Woodford [MEPIS]: Again it's a matter of what you mean by those words.
| Mark [Shuttleworth] and I talked it over before I switched to Ubuntu.
| He's clear that MEPIS is an independent distro. And yet, it is fair
| to say on the Ubuntu site that MEPIS is a derivative of Ubuntu,
| from the point of view that we use the Ubuntu packages. And we
| use them by choice, because they meet our needs and they're
| the best available. That reference at the Ubuntu site says
| that we endorse Ubuntu, and we do.

A Vista vs. Linux Matchup

,----[ Quote ]
| Putting aside Apple hardware, where all the software works with
| all the hardware so long as it's all up to the minute, I found
| that MEPIS actually has better hardware support for this PC
| ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
| than Vista.
| ^^^^^^^^^^
|
| [...]
|
| Adding insult to injury, since DRM protection schemes must
| evolve constantly, to stay ahead of hackers tearing them down,
| I have little doubt that one day you'll come home to find that
| a Vista update to DRM-protection has just locked you out of your
| media collection. You know, the same collection, which had
| worked just fine the day before. Repeat after me: DRM does
| not belong in operating systems.

SaxenOS and SimplyMEPIS - bumps in the middle of the road

,----[ Quote ]
| SaxenOS 2.0 Beta 1
|
| [...]
|
| I've always liked STX and can say I believe I like SaxenOS even better.
| It's still wonderful for older hardware and now with 2.0 it is easier
| to install and use. It's always fast, stable, and fairly complete. I
| feel like the version bump perhaps should have come at the beginning
| of this development cycle due to the massive interface changes, so
| it is definitely justified now.
|
| [...]
|
| SimplyMEPIS 6.5 Beta 5
|
| [...]
|
| Despite KDE still being version 3.5.3 and much of the same software
| is offered, the updated look and feel as well as the X server and
| promise of Beryl does seem to justify a version bump mid-cycle
| for SimplyMEPIS.

Simply Mepis 6.0-4 Beta 4 -- A gift from the MEPIS gods 64 Bit that actually
works

,----[ Quote ]
| To quote myself, something I never do, "I will be back for the 64 bit
| when available however, as I am still waiting on a distro that will
| uncork my boat anchor." Well, guess what folks? I am happy to say
| that MEPIS is now my default system and I am happy to be running 64
| bit on my not so much of a boat anchor laptop.

TestDriving SimplyMepis 6.0-4 Beta 2

,----[ Quote ]
| The playing field is a bit more competitive these days, but
| SimplyMepis is still a very good choice for newcomers and
| experienced alike. They paved the way for many of today's
| distros in many areas and I'd like to see them reach a higher
| level of popularity again. Perhaps this release will help. Time
| will tell.
