Certainly, but industry standard barcodes would require a lot more real
estate to store the same amount of information.  It's not just Microsoft
that has seen this problem, there are right now a number of contendors for
higher capacity bar codes.  UPS has been using a proprietary one for years.

Why?  Because there currently is not an industry standard high capacity bar
code.
