Yes, and I was not the only one to have thought so. Remember how Microsoft
retracted its free Office offers last month. It was in the Reg and it led to a
small commotion. Charities whose files are locked in to DOC/XLS/whatever (i.e.
Microsoft Office only) are now forced to pay plenty of money not to serve and
achieve their goals, but to access data, which is now perpetually held
hostage. Microsoft had charities addicted. The same goes for some people in
poor nations.
Microsoft needs to create some revenue growth. It began squeezing the goose
(similar to opening the anti-Linux FUD arsenal). From here onwards, Microsoft
will be loathed more than anyone could ever imagine. Hopefully, history will
have it remembered in a suitable way, not the Gates' way (he buys media
companies and created museums).
