Playing the numbers game: how many Linux installations and users are out there?

| But smolt is only an opt-in tool and is not offered during text installations
| (Servers, etc.) at all. According to Fedora’s statistics page the estimated
| ratio between smolt data and reality is 1 to 10. This would result in 1.25
| million Fedora users - and therefore in 25 million Linux users.
| Looks nice, especially considering the fact that Apple’s userbase was around
| 22 million half a year ago.
| Ubuntu
| There is another possible approach to these numbers: Ubuntu’s Mark
| Shuttleworth estimated 8 million Ubuntu users in an interview in late
| December 2006. And both the Linux Desktop Survey and the web server logs from
| Distro Watch gave Ubuntu roughly 30 % of the cake. This makes more than 26.6
| million Linux users 8 month ago.

Many Linux PCs are not connected (or appliance-ed), so it's probably much
higher than this.

Wii overtakes Xbox 360, becomes No.1

| When it comes to Sony's share of the market, it is obvious that the company
| is in a dire need for Gran Turismo 5, which looks absolutely brilliant and we
| can now predict that an additional 2-3 million consoles should be sold when
| that title comes out. But for now, Sony has the lead in combined PS2/3 market
| share, but in prostituted "next-gen" term area, PS3 can only hold the candle
| for Wii and Xbox 360.

| So it is that Cherry asks that, "If desktop Linux market data is important to
| you or your company, please become involved in the statix project and in the
| deployment of this tool on every distro. I realize that market data can be a
| double-edged sword, so distro vendors should get those issues on the table
| early."

Hard to track Linux stats

| "The characteristic of open source software is that it is freely available on
| the network. People are encouraged to download it, use it as many times as
| they want, modify it to fit their needs, of course, depending upon the open
| source license."

Smolt profiles distro hardware use

| For instance, according to the publicly available stats, 78% of respondents
| were running Pentium IIIs or equivalents, and 20% x86_64. The dominant
| language used was US English at 67%, with Japanese a distant second at 6.1%.
| 34% were running systems with less than half a gigabyte of RAM, 37% were
| using half to a gigabyte, and 24% over two gigabytes.

| "Linux is the default operating [system] on desktops and servers at major
| animation and visual effects studios, with maybe 98 percent [or more]
| penetration," CinePaint Project Manager Robin Rowe told LinuxInsider.
