My experience has been that it seems to take most people about four goes
before they start to grasp a truly new idea or concept, particularly one
which goes against the current perceived wisdom.

I've had so many discussions and debates within my organisation on the
concepts of lock-in and how it works, for example, I couldn't tell you
how many there have been.

The real problem sets in, though, when you're up against a propaganda
machine (PR company, salesmen, etc.), since they will use all manner of
underhand tactics in order to blunt your wisdom in favour of their
"self-evident" truths (yes, I really have had people at work claim that
things are "self-evident").

When you're not, though, people usually think through what you've said,
spot a hole somewhere which you haven't yet covered, and come back for
another discussion. Those people who are really trying to uncover
verities will get it in about four goes, the smart ones might get it in
fewer, but the politicians will never get it, because they choose not
to.

It has surprised me how many people in this group still don't really
grasp what lock-in is and how it works, even though I must've explained
it over, and over, and over, and over.
