This looks like a competitor to the Thinkpad X series and the
ultralight VAIO series.

Ultralights running Vista are a special challenge. You need about 6
MIPs (1.3 Ghz dual core DUO), 2 Gb of RAM, and a fast hard drive, but
you have to keep the power consumption as low as possible to minimize
the size of the battery.
Add to that the high resolution WXGA display, and you have a $1700
machine.

The ASUS Eee supports Linux.
Linux works very nicely with 1/2 gig of RAM, 4 gig SD-RAM drive, and
since it has no internal mechanical hard drive (External USB drive can
be added), it doesn't need huge batteries. Which means that it goes
for less than $400.

Microsoft is working on an "XP Lite" that can be used with OLPC type
computers, but appearantly, it's been stripped pretty bare, and there
aren't many applications that will run on these PCs. Even many FOSS
applications won't fit.

That's the savings for 100 employees.
Now, multiply that times 1,000 employees - that's $1/2 million.
Or 10,000 employees - that's $5 million.

Prudential Insurance has over 100,000 employees - $50 million.

IBM has over 500,000 employees - $500 million.

But the author didn't mention the cost of windows system failures,
virus attacks, and other common problems that often require the laptop
or desktop to be re-imaged. This can take up to a week per employee
to discover, diagnose, and recover. It could take another week to get
all of the 3rd party applications and settings recovered. Passwords
and confidential information may be lost, and there's always those
business files that were corrupted and never backed up properly.

What is the real cost of Windows or Vista? $2,000 per year? $5,000
per year?
Imagine if it were $10,000 per year? That means Prudential is
throwing $1,000,000,000 per year, yes $1 billion per year, down the
Microsoft Toilet.

And what about how people work? How much time is spent doing manual
copy and paste between documents, because there is now way to script
the transformation efficiently? That could be another $10,000 per
employee per year.

What is the REAL cost of not having Linux? What is the REAL cost of
continuing to pour Money down the Microsoft hole?

Inquiring minds want to know?
