Record Data Breaches in 2007, Groups Say

,----[ Quote ]
| "More of them are experiencing data breaches, and they're responding to them
| in a reactive way, rather than proactively looking at the company's security
| and seeing where the holes might be," said Linda Foley, who founded the San
| Diego-based Identity Theft Resource Center after becoming an identity theft
| victim herself.

When most (Windows) PCs are infected in some way, who can be surprised? Merely
everything that is stored on Windows is open to intrusion.

| Sure, it’s been said before, but this time it’s true: 2007 was undoubtedly
| the year which saw Linux go mainstream. Linux has long accepted as a server
| platform and a playground for tweakers, hackers and the adventurous, but 2007
| saw major events which entrenched Linux on the desktop. Let’s look at what
| happened.

The feds weigh in on Windows security

| "The benefits of this move are enormous: Common, secure configurations
| can help slow botnet spreading, can radically reduce delays in patching,
| can stop many attacks directly, and organizations that have made the
| move report that it actually saves money rather than costs money,"

Microsoft Muscles the NYS Legislature

| Microsoft’s proposed change to state law would effectively render
| our current requirements for escrow and the ability for independent
| review of source code in the event of disputes completely meaningless

| "Nineteen machines had 21 screen freezes or system crashes, producing a

| the printer drivers, you don't know whether it's Diebold's own code or
| whether it's Windows,"

| Problems found in an audit of Diebold tabulation records from an Ohio
| November 2006 election raise questions about whether the database got
| corrupted during the tabulation of election results...
|
| The database is built from Microsoft's Jet database engine. The
| engine, according to Microsoft, is vulnerable to corruption when a lot
| of concurrent activity is happening with the database, such as what
| occurs on an election night [and Microsoft advises againt using Jet in
| a complex environment]...
|
| The report mentions that election staff had trouble with the server
| crashing and freezing on election night....
|
| The report notes that with punch card machines election officials used
| to be able to determine definitively if all ballots had been counted
| in the results....
