Seems like a facebook-type investment from Microsoft.

Profitability of software has changed because of online software (Web-based
services) and Free software like GNU/Linux. Microsoft has begun looking at
processors, connectivity, peripherals, etc. XBox360 and Zune are hardware.
Apple makes a lot of money in this way.
